In the good old day, Travel Agent was the only place you can get your trip, whether for domestic or international holiday, "Without agents you are on your own". However the table has changed, holiday makers no longer have to depend on agent anymore, but can reach out in various ways to secure the booking elsewhere. It sounds like risk taking, but some certain steps can make it as easy as abc.  And if you are in the market for Vietnam or Indochina, It is your time! 

It has been always a daunting question for anyone when it come to time for a holiday decision. Not so long ago, the most sensible thing when you thought about your holidays was to drop in to your nearest agent, grab some brochures and let your inspiration to guide you. You may pick one or two packages, shop around and decide what you need.  They then help you to arrange everything, from packages, air tickets, insurance, accommodation and the list go on and on...
You may never ask yourself where agents get their trips from, or whether you have a best deal yet?
Trips normally come from wholesalers. Wholesaler can be an agent themselves, tour operators, or any service providers. In most cases, wholesaler don’t run the trip by themselves but they run it via the tour operators who they buy services from. In Vietnam case, often they buy from Vietnamese licensed tour operators. The trips then will be insured, rebranded to the networks and come to you.
 When we did the research in some of the prominent markets, we found out that agents tend to belong to different group/chain to sell services provided from one wholesaler. In the meantime agents in the same network are obliged to sell the same trips with literally the same price. So if you after for the different services, or better deal you would better look for different brand.
Trip got from Vietnam tour operators, rebranded by wholesalers, to travel agents, may come up to 30-40% in price. Why? Because, most of them work on commission. Price would include commission and travel compensation assurance. In some countries, funds are run to primarily provide compensation to eligible travelers who suffer loss as a result of the financial collapse of a participating travel agency business.  In Vietnam, legitimate (or licensed ) tour operators also have to attend in similar fund ,closely monitored by Vietnam Tourism Administration.

So you are equally safe.

Online travel deal - do your research.

Thing has changed in the last couple of years when travel agents no longer dictate which airline you are going to have or whom you would travel with. Airliners have been aggressively advertising cheap tickets anywhere in the world. Just have a quick look through some airlines’ website who provide service to Vietnam  like Singapore Airlines (www.singaporeair.com), Malaysia Airlines (www.malaysiaairlines.com), Thai Airway (www.thaiairways.com), Vietnam airlines (www.vietnamairlines.com), ... You will find plenty of discounts going on suit your budget and time.

“Travel Wholesalers” from only sell trip to travel agents in their own networks, now start to have shop fronts or offer online travel deals directly to customers. Even Insurance Companies start to pull the rug out by selling travel insurance online, 30% cheaper than that of retail price. Thank to the internet, tour operators in Vietnam can also reach to further markets, offering genuinely local services and unique travel packages for keen customers. On plus side, because they run their own trips so dont have to pay for any commission, inturn travellers can have the best they can pay for.
It is not spelt the May day of travel agents yet. No one can replace the one who know well about their services, and their customers. Importantly, the ones who take advantage of having direct contacts with Vietnam travel agent in providing customised packages to be unique and unparallel quality.
Computer cannot say “No” anymore. And it turns into you, the Traveller, who will benefit from your own judgment.
